This text discusses the changes of punishment throughout history of the societies. It analyzes the softening of physical punishment and the ascension of prison as main locus of punishment in the modern world. It relates these processes with the social differentiation, character of power and change in the conception of crimes. It points the need for the creation of penal institutions that answer better to the new aspirations of moral conscience.
It can be formulated as follows: “The intensity of punishment is greater to the extent that the society belongs to a less developed type and to the extent that the central power has a more absolute character”.
Having explained the formula of the law, we must now show that it applies to the facts. As it cannot be a matter of reviewing all peoples, we shall choose those which have reached a certain degree of development and which are known with some determination. As for the rest, as we have tried to show in other works, the essential of a sociological demonstration is not to overwhelm with facts, but to constitute series of regular variations “whose terms are linked to one another by as continuous a gradation as possible, and which are sufficiently extensive. “4

1On the occasion of the colloquium organized in Bordeaux in 19991 I had the opportunity to present a brief study related to a manuscript preserved in the Archives of the City Council of Valencia. It was a text written from the notes of a student in the rhetoric class of Juan Lorenzo Palmireno in 1576:

16From a philological point of view, the presence of the seseo21 and the diminutives in “ico22 ” in the two manuscripts refer to the pronunciation of an Aragonese in a Catalan-speaking area, that of Palmireno himself or of a disciple raised in the same region. As for the vowel fluctuations, they reflect the state of the language at the end of the 16th century.

LOS SINÓNIMOS Y LOS ANTÓNIMOS | Aprende lengua con
Ponerse metas en la vida es siempre un proyecto ambicioso. Nunca he luchado seriamente por establecer nuevas metas, pero por otro lado nunca he rehuido hacerlo. Al fin y al cabo, dominé con éxito dos cursos de estudio y, al menos, aprendí a hablar tres lenguas extranjeras con fluidez. Por supuesto, esto es bastante impresionante y, al menos, algo que me hace decir que he alcanzado mis objetivos intrapersonales.
Pero nunca cumplí estos objetivos con un sentimiento de logro orgulloso porque no pude construir ningún nivel emocional para ellos. Ni antes de alcanzar el objetivo ni después. Al alcanzar un objetivo, también lo percibía como un medio para alcanzar un fin.
Rara vez me he hartado o satisfecho y sólo he comprobado rápidamente la meta que siempre se ha alcanzado o, a veces, incluso superado. El epígrafe era siempre apresurarse y no descansar nunca en el propio éxito.
Incluso quise continuar después de mi Master con un título de Doctor. Pero mi antigua universidad en España prolongó artificialmente la certificación de mi máster en un acto de caos administrativo e incapacidad profesional sin precedentes. De ahí que, tras tres periodos de matrícula transcurridos para un posible programa de doctorado en otra universidad, finalmente se me hayan quitado las ganas de perder aún más la paciencia o el tiempo por culpa de unos imbéciles. Es curioso mencionar en este punto que todavía estoy esperando el título oficial después de 2,5 años. ¡Increíble!
